Orangemen are forced through nationalist Ardoyne every July 12 under the watch of up to 3000 Northern Ireland police and British Soldiers. Each July 12, Orangemen march all over Northern Ireland to commemorate the Battle of the Boyne of 1691. Most marches are peaceful but some are provocative as they insist on passing through nationalist neighborhoods provoking the residents. The Orangemen march to a rally in central Belfast in the morning and then return in the evening. The morning marches in Ardoyne largely pass without incident. The Orangemen return in the evenings with loyalist supporters, many who have been drinking beer all day. The evening marches create confrontations between the paraders and the residents.
